Sweef Capital Intern Case Study Series
At Sweef Capital, our internships reflect our commitment to building inclusive and resilient economies through impact investing. Our interns are typically students or recent graduates who bring diverse perspectives and skillsets to advancing gender equity, climate action, and sustainable growth across Southeast Asia.
Through these internships, we support young talent at the start of their careers, equipping them with the tools, exposure, and mindset to become thoughtful leaders in the impact ecosystem.
In this series, we spotlight our interns and their journeys.
Tell us a bit about your background and interests.
I am a penultimate student at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, pursuing a BBA in Global Business and Finance, with a strong interest in impact driven investing and cross border capital markets. Outside of academics, I enjoy playing poker and chess, which have sharpened my strategic thinking, as well as exploring collectibles markets and reading about strategy and history.
What made you join the Sweef Capital internship program, and how did your background and interests connect to its mission?
I was drawn to Sweef Capital because of its clear commitment to building inclusive and resilient economies through impact investing. Having previously worked in corporate banking and equity research, I wanted to apply my analytical skills to a mission driven setting that prioritizes gender equity, climate action, and sustainable growth across Southeast Asia. Sweef’s focus on emerging markets and underrepresented sectors perfectly aligned with my passion for creating meaningful social and economic impact.
Can you describe a project or initiative you’ve worked on that relates to impact investing, gender equality, or climate action?
During my time at Sweef, I had the opportunity to engage with the firm’s proprietary Gender ROI framework, which was truly eye-opening. This diagnostic tool is designed to identify gaps in gender equality across leadership, the workforce, value chains, and society. I supported the team in evaluating potential investments, helping to apply this lens to assess how companies performed not just financially, but also on gender equality across their operations. This involved examining workplace policies, leadership representation, and community impact, which gave me a deep appreciation for how impact investing integrates measurable social outcomes with financial discipline. It was incredibly rewarding to contribute to Sweef’s mission of unlocking the economic power of women and driving value creation through our investments.
How do your contributions support Sweef Capital’s broader goals around building inclusive and sustainable businesses?
I focused on being reliable and ready to step in wherever support was needed, whether it was helping to synthesize data for investment memos or preparing materials for the team. By ensuring that our internal reports and due diligence documents were thorough and well organized, I helped the team move forward with confidence in our investment decisions. I also made it a point to bring a positive attitude to every task, knowing that even the smallest contributions helped strengthen the team’s ability to focus on building inclusive and sustainable businesses across the region.
What hands-on experiences or mentorship at Sweef Capital have been most influential for your professional growth?
The mentorship I received at Sweef was truly invaluable. I gained hands-on exposure to how private equity deals come together, from initial due diligence to final investment committee discussions. More importantly, my supervisors took the time to walk me through their investment philosophies, patiently explaining the nuances of impact investing and how they balance financial returns with social outcomes. This guidance helped me understand not just the mechanics of the deals, but the heart behind each decision.
Could you share an example of a challenge you faced during your internship, and how guidance from mentors or peers shaped your approach?
Navigating tight deadlines and managing last minute requests was definitely a challenge during my time at Sweef. There were many late nights spent grinding to get deliverables across the finish line, whether it was finalizing reports or responding to urgent team needs. However, the team’s guidance and unwavering support taught me how to stay organized under pressure and maintain a positive attitude. My mentors encouraged me to prioritize effectively and reminded me that every effort contributed to the bigger picture, which helped me approach each challenge with resilience and a solutions oriented mindset.
In what ways has this internship shaped your perspective on impact investing, entrepreneurship, or your future career path?
This internship showed me that impact investing is not just about financial returns. It is about deploying capital to drive sustainable change in underserved markets. It has inspired me to pursue a career at the intersection of finance and social impact, and I now see myself working in private equity or venture capital with a clear focus on emerging markets and inclusive growth.
How do you plan to apply the skills and knowledge gained at Sweef Capital in your next steps?
I am currently applying the skills I gained at Sweef in my role as an Off-Cycle Analyst at FWD Life Hong Kong, where I support investments across fixed income, equities, and alternatives. More than just the technical skills, I carry forward the reliability, work ethic, and impact first mindset I developed at Sweef. I approach every task with the same dedication and readiness to step in that the team inspired in me, and I hope to bring these values into every future role I take on.
Fun question. If your internship at Sweef Capital were a nasi padang order, what would it be and why?
It would be nasi padang with rendang, sayur nangka, daun ubi, and a side of sambal. A little bit of everything, bold in flavor, and always satisfying. Just like my internship, it was a rich mix of challenges, learning, culture, and collaboration, with a spicy kick of excitement every day.
